There is a growing call to embrace patient engagement in the world of health care, and Kathy Oliver, chair of the International Brain Tumour Alliance (IBTA), is one of many patient advocates at the vanguard of this movement around the world. Patient organizations like IBTA are increasingly at the forefront of patient engagement across various health care domains, including in the design of clinical trials, drug development, health care policy, pricing and reimbursement decisions, and regulatory issues.

One of the central challenges of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis ALS research is finding ways to slow the progression of the relentlessly degenerative brain disease. Recently, based on results of the HEALEY ALS Platform Trial, two experimental medications plan to move to phase 3 clinical trials. This means the drugs will now be tested on a larger sample population to confirm promising early results that showed they can slow the progression of ALS. Phase 3 trials are the last step before drugs are submitted for FDA approval. 

Among U.S. adults who have had COVID-19, a staggering 28% report having experienced long COVID complications, and the CDC estimates that long COVID currently impacts 6% of the population. Despite the prevalence of long COVID, researchers still don’t understand the full scope of COVID-19’s impact on the brain. 

The World Health Organization (WHO) revealed its new Intersectoral Global Action Plan (IGAP), a critical blueprint for combating neurological conditions that calls for urgent action from governments and health care organizations around the world. IGAP outlines goals to help governments and national health care organizations direct research and investment in areas with the greatest possible impact on global health.

The World Federation of Neurology (WFN) and the Canadian Neurological Society (CNS) will host the XXVI World Congress of Neurology (WCN) in Montreal, Canada, from October 15 to 19, 2023. WCN is a major, biennial conference where world-class neurologists and researchers gather to share the latest innovative research in the broad field of neurology. This year’s WCN marks the first in-person conference since the COVID-19 pandemic, with thousands of attendees from around the world convening to learn from one another’s research, exchange ideas and drive the field of neurology forward.

The Nominating Committee of the World Federation of Neurology now recommends to the membership candidates for WFN Treasurer and Elected Trustee.

On 28 December, 2023, WFN President Prof Dr Wolfgang Grisold was honoured to be invited to serve as a member of World Health Organisation's (WHO) Support Group for the "Global Road Map to Defeat Meningitis by 2030" on behalf of World Federation of Neurology (WFN). 

The results of the WFN 2022 Elections for Secretary General and elected trustee were announced during the recent Council of Delegates Meeting.
