A new study explores the overlap between posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) and reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS), two disorders linked to cerebrovascular dysregulation. While traditionally considered separate conditions, the findings suggest overlapping presentations may occur more frequently than previously recognised.
Researchers found that patients with overlapping PRES and RCVS features experienced higher rates of both ischaemic infarcts and intracerebral haemorrhage compared to patients with either condition alone. Despite these increased complications, most patients still achieved favourable outcomes. The overlap group also showed imaging and inflammatory patterns that appeared to share characteristics of both syndromes.
Read the full article for a deeper look at how PRES-RCVS overlap may influence diagnosis, imaging interpretation, and management of cerebrovascular disorders.
