Akinesia And Rigidity In Parkinson Disease

Claudia Trenkwalder (59 years old) was devoted to Parkinson disease and movement disorders since she started her residency in neurology in 1988 with clinical research in PD and restless legs syndrome.

After residency at the University Medical Hospital Munich she continued her research at the UMDNJ, USA, and at the Max-Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich, Germany, with a focus on sleep research in movement disorders.

After moving to the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology of University Medical Center in Goettingen, she became medical director of the Paracelsus-Elena Clinic in Kassel, the largest hospital for Parkinson and Movement Disorders in Germany. She restructured the hospital adding a research and a clinical trial center.

She is working closely with several national and international groups of Parkinson research and was PI of more than 20 international clinical trials in the last 15 years including pivotal trials for drugs approved for restless legs syndrome and PD.

She was and is continuously active in scientific and patient society’s work: she was a founding member of World Association of Sleep Medicine, with further unifying two world sleep societies to “World sleep” in 2016, is active in the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder society (IPMDS) for 15 years, currently being its president since September 2019.

She is member of many international research groups and boards, and in her role as a female leader she is devoted to mentoring young female clinicians and researchers. Claudia Trenkwalder has published more than 380 per reviewed articles including those in Lancet Neurology, Neurology and Movement Disorders, in addition many book chapters and two books for patients are available.
