Prof Axel Petzold is a clinician–scientist with broad expertise across multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis, neurodegeneration and neuro-critical care. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the Royal College of Pathologists, reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of his work.

Prof Petzold has held several prominent leadership roles, including serving as Chair for Neuro-Ophthalmology within the European Reference Networks for Rare Diseases. He has been instrumental in developing integrated care pathways between Moorfields Eye Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, strengthening collaboration between neurology and ophthalmology services.

With more than 350 peer-reviewed publications, including over 100 as first author, he has contributed extensively to advancing the understanding of visual and neuro-inflammatory disease mechanisms. His work includes two edited books, a monograph, and multiple book chapters. His commitment to scientific quality is reflected in his >570 verified peer reviews (Researcher ID: C-1090-2009).

Prof Petzold is also deeply committed to training and mentorship, having supervised and supported fellows and researchers from around the world. Through his combined clinical, research and educational contributions, he continues to shape the field internationally.
