Aksel Siva (Turkey)

Professor Aksel Siva was born in Istanbul and trained at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa School of Medicine, where he later became Professor and Chair of Neurology. He founded and led the Clinical Neuroimmunology Unit and Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, which evolved into Turkey’s leading center for patient care, research, and education in multiple sclerosis and related disorders, a role he continued until his retirement in 2022.

He remains actively engaged in clinical and basic research on multiple sclerosis and related neuroimmunological diseases, and currently serves as an adviser to the Clinical Neuroimmunology Unit & Multiple Sclerosis Clinic at his institution. He also continues his long-standing educational activities for residents, fellows, and medical students.

Internationally recognized for his scientific and educational leadership, he has served as President of the Turkish Neurological Society, on the Executive Committees of ECTRIMS, European Neurological Society and within the European Academy of Neurology and World Federation of Neurology.

A founder and core member of the Radiologically Isolated Syndrome Consortium (RISC), Professor Siva has published over 200 papers. His distinguished career has been honored with the Türkan Saylan Medical Science Award (2021), the Turkish Neurological Society Science and Service Award (2024), Ted Munsat Education Award (2025) and the “2025 Balo lecture and memorial prize” by the Hungarian Neuroimmunology Society (2025).
