A Powerful Partnership for Brain Health Across Africa

As the countdown to World Brain Day 2025 continues, the World Federation of Neurology (WFN) is proud to highlight its important and ongoing partnership with the African Academy of Neurology (AFAN)—a crucial regional ally in the shared mission to advance brain health for all ages.

In a recent conversation at EAN 2025, AFAN President Professor Lawrence Tucker and World Brain Day Co-Chair Professor Tissa Wijeratne explored Africa’s vital role in the global neurology landscape and the unique opportunity WBD2025 presents to elevate the voice of the continent’s 54 nations.

With its vast diversity, growing population, and evolving healthcare systems, Africa faces some of the greatest challenges in global neurology. Neurological disorders are rising rapidly across the continent, often compounded by barriers in access to care, limited training opportunities, and socioeconomic constraints. Yet there is extraordinary energy, commitment, and expertise among African neurologists who are working to meet these challenges head-on.

AFAN’s mission—to unify neurologists across Africa and promote excellence in care, education, and public awareness—is perfectly aligned with the WFN’s commitment to quality neurology for all, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where the burden of brain disease is greatest.

Together, WFN and AFAN are leveraging the momentum of World Brain Day 2025 to drive forward a continent-wide celebration of brain health. Through webinars, regional events, media outreach, and local advocacy, African neurologists will come together to showcase their leadership and call for action to improve access, equity, and lifelong care for neurological conditions.

This year’s theme, “Brain Health for All Ages,” resonates deeply in Africa, where early-life neurological conditions, stroke, epilepsy, neuroinfectious diseases, and the growing burden of dementia all demand urgent attention.

Tune in, engage, and explore this important conversation between Prof. Tucker and Prof. Wijeratne—two leaders committed to transforming brain health in Africa and beyond.

World Brain Day is 22 July 2025
