Mechanisms To Medicines In Neurodegeneration

Giovanna Mallucci

Giovanna Mallucci is Centre Director of the UK Dementia Research Institute at the University of Cambridge and van Geest Professor of Clinical Neurosciences. She studied Medicine at the University of Oxford and at University College, London and specialized in Neurology.

She obtained her PhD from the University of London, during which she generated the first adult-onset mouse model of prion protein knockout that paved the way to her discoveries about reversibility of early neurodegeneration. Her laboratory is pioneering interventions targeting common dysregulated homeostasis pathways for new treatments for dementia. She has published original research in, inter alia, Nature, Science, Neuron, EMBO Journal, Brain and Science Translational Medicine.

Her work on the role of the Unfolded Protein Response and its pharmacological manipulation was hailed as “turning point in search for medicines to control and prevent Alzheimer’s”.

She has received numerous international awards for her work, including the 2021 Potamkin Prize for Research in Pick’s, Alzheimer’s and Related disorders. She is an ERC Consolidator Fellow and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
