Goals of the ERNG are to promote clinical research and education in all matters having to do with the adverse effects of environmental substances/events, including neurotoxins, upon the nervous system. These include, but are not limited to: heavy metals, volatile hydrocarbons, and insecticides & pesticides. Humans may be exposed to these substances/events in industrial/occupations situations or as a result of terrorism.
Clinical studies and educational meetings are in progress or planned.

World MS Day
World MS day 2010 will take place on 26 May 2010.
The IMSB of MSIF
The International Medical & Scientific Board (IMSB) of the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF) is a unique group of medical professionals, bringing together over 60 experts in MS from around the world. Each member society of MSIF can nominate two representatives to the IMSB. These are usually leading neurologists and MS experts in the country and often Chair of the National Scientific and Medical Board (or equivalent) of the MS Society. The IMSB plays a central role in advising the Council and Board of the MSIF - an international body linking the activities of national MS societies around the world - on matters of MS medical research, professional education and information and services and plays a key role in the management of MSIF's research programmes.
Key roles
The Chairman of the IMSB is Prof. Alan Thompson, Professor of Clinical Neurology & Neurorehabilitation and Director of the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, University College, London. Prof Chris Polman, Professor of Neurology at the Free University and Clinical and Scientific Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Centre at the VU Medical Centre in Amsterdam is the Deputy Chairman of the IMSB. Prof. Alan Thompson heads the IMSB executive committee who oversee MSIF's research activities and include Prof. Chris Polman (Netherlands), Prof. Alastair Compston (UK), Prof Reinhard Hohlfeld (Germany), Prof Fred Lublin (USA), Prof. Xavier Montalban (Spain), Dr. Carlo Pozzilli (Italy) and Dr. Ernest Willoughby (New Zealand).
Research programmes
These include the following:
- Research grants and fellowships:
- Du Pré Grants (up to £5000, allow researchers to travel to MS centres of excellence)
- McDonald Fellowship (£25,000 pa for 2 years)
- Charcot Award (lifetime achievement award)
- International Research Meeting Grants (up to £5000 to aid towards international research meetings)
- International Pediatric MS Study Group (IPMSSG) - we facilitate and coordinate activities of the group and provide and secure funding for their research meetings.
- Research funding database - development of a database to hold annual research funding figures of larger MS societies which will allow annual monitoring of funding trends to spot gaps and duplications and enable future funding decision-making.
- Research Alumni Programme - towards building a global MS community - all MSIF grant and fellowship recipients become alumni
- Research publications:
- MS: The Guide to Treatment and Management (also available online)
- MS in focus (bi annual magazine focusing on various topics in MS)
- Making Connections (weekly newsletter including Research News)
Key relationships
IMSB Chairman Alan Thompson, Paul Rompani of MSIF and some members of the IMSB worked closely with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the production of the 'Atlas of MS' publication and website, providing information and data on the epidemiology of MS and the availability and accessibility of resources to diagnose, inform, treat, support, manage and rehabilitate people with MS worldwide.
